The Thirteenth Tale

A few days ago I started “The Thirteenth Tale” by Diane Setterfield. So far, I like it. I’m about a sixth of the way through. Other than the recommendation from my friend I know nothing about the book, and have no expectations. That is how I prefer it. No spoilers.

Sometimes I wish I could read faster. There are so many good books out there, and so little time. My comprehension is good, but my reading speed is average. Youtube has some video with speed reading techniques. Subvocalization is my problem. I don’t actually say the words, but I think them in my head as I read. It’s like my personal narrator is reading the story to me. There are techniques for getting rid of subvocalization, but I can tell it’s going to take some work.

Update:  Progress on the book has been slow. I got into some uncomfortable reading, which I hope won’t be the focus of the story. With the holidays coming to a close I should have time to do more reading.

Another update: I finally decided that there are so many things I’d rather do than finish a book I have not the slightest sliver of interest in. Reading about incest may be interesting to some, but not at all to me. The book made me feel extremely uncomfortable and disgusted. I haven’t picked it up again since my last update, and don’t plan to. Life is just to short.
